Altena castle

If you take the Weststraat coming from Moerkerke, in the direction of Vivenkapelle, you can see on your left side, between the trees, the castle of Altena.  A nice lane gives access to the domain.

The name Altena comes from a place in Germany that had the same name.  In the 14th century, German knights (under the command of the count of Altena) fought on the side of the count of Flanders against the king of France.  The Flemish count  lent a part of his domain of Male to the count of Altena.   Lateron, a descendant of the count of Altena came to settle on this place.

Before the present chateau, there were already 2 other castles.  The last one was burnt to the ground in 1918 by German troops; the present manor was built in 1929.  The park was laid-out in the 19th century.

This castle is private property and is not open to the public.
