Sleckeput

You have to know it to see it.  It doesn't seem to be more than a pit with water, but it is more than that.  It may be hard to believe, but this is a unique remainder from the glory days of Damme.  The Sleckeput, as it is called by the people (translated it means: pit of slugs), used to be the last lock-chamber which gave access to the port of Damme.  In the age that it was constructed, it was a token for the power and ingenuity of the region.
This construction is now entirely covered with plants.  It is a pity that such a rare construction has been left aside.  It is a protected monument and there are plans to restore it.
The Sleckeput lies in the Rabattestraat and can easily be seen from the road.
