Schellemolen (Damme)

You can't miss the mill of Damme.  He proudly stands high above his direct environment besides the Damse Vaart.  Since the beginning of the small town, there already used to be a wooden standardmill on this same spot, called the "Scellemeulen".  This mill was owned by the counts of Flanders; in 1267 the rights on this mill were sold to the town by countess Margareta van Constantinopel.  However, half of the revenues still had to be handed over to the counts.

The present windmill was built in 1867 on the place of the wooden standardmill (above) and remained operational until 1963.  In 1971, he was then bought by the province West-Vlaanderen and restored in 1975-77.  Since this restoration, the wings swiftly turn in the wind again during the summer months.  In 1975, the mill became a protected monument.

The mill is open to the public.  Wheelchair users can visit the ground-floor.  For openinghours, please contact the Tourism Office.
