Sint-Christoffelhoeve (Farm
St.-Christoffel)
This
impressive, old farm lies on the west bank of the Damse Vaart. Already in
the 16th century, it was known under the same name. It became a 'castle
farm' (kasteelgoed "de Proostdije ") in 1755, when it was bought by
canon Van der Stricht, who also owned the gothic house "de Grote Sterre",
on the Market Square of Damme.
The
farm is encircled by a wall, access is possible via a 18th century gate.
Above that gate, you can see the weapon and the device of canon Van der Stricht,
which is also placed above the entrance of "Huyze de Grote
Sterre". Pacem Opto means as much as "peace I
choose". The complex consists of a living area, a wagonhouse, a barn
and a sheep stable. Please, pay attention to the exceptional
roofconstruction (curb- or mansardroof). Next to the St.-Christoffelhoeve,
stands another old farm named "d'Oude
Schaapskooi" (freely translated that would be: the old sheep shed).
This
farm is not open to the public.
